SAINSBURY’S is the latest supermarket to shake up its loyalty program with new discounts for Nectar Card members.
This follows changes to Tesco Clubcard and Boots Advantage card offers.
Shoppers were furious last month when Tesco revealed that from June it would reduce the maximum value of Clubcard rewards for the second time in five years.
Its popular triple points offer will soon be reduced to just double the points. And Boots is also reducing the number of Advantage points you earn per book starting in May, but at the same time it’s launching a lot more discounts.
With so many plans on the market and so many changes, how can you get the most out of your points?
Our consumer team reveals all the tips for pocketing free points and benefiting from the best discounts…
NECTAR KNOW-HOW
Reward: One point earned for every £1 spent
Value: 5p per point
SAINSBURY’S has beefed up its Nectar price offering, giving cardholders discounts on 300 items in a bid to compete with Tesco’s Clubcard prices.
Now anyone who scans their Nectar card at checkout or online can get special discounts, such as 39 Ariel washing powder pods from £10.50 to £5.
To increase your points, scan your Nectar card or enter your details online when shopping at Esso, Asos, eBay, Expedia, Habitat and Argos.
Download the Nectar app to get personalized bonus offers and points on frequent purchases.
According to Nectar, customers earn an average of three times more points on their purchases when they use the app’s bonus offers.
Offers vary, but have included up to 2,000 free points.
Members can earn up to 120 points by completing surveys at Nectar Canvass (nectar canvass.rn-partner.com).
Collect 100 points just by downloading the Nectar Notifier browser extension (nectar.com/nectar-notifier).
It also pays up to 200 points per month based on your internet search count and reminds you when you might be collecting points with brands as you shop.
ICELAND AND MORE
Top up your Iceland Bonus prepaid card with £20 and get £1 free.
ONE of the most generous loyalty programs is the Icelandic bonus card, but it works very differently from the others.
It’s a prepaid card and every time you add £20 to it, you get a £1 top-up, an increase of 5%.
At Asda, shoppers who are part of its rewards program can earn money when they buy certain Star products
Normally this is 10% of the price, which goes into a ‘crate’ to be spent on future stores.
But you can boost your pot with Superstar products – for example, get 50 pence back on a 2 liter bottle of Diet Coke.
At Morrisons, shoppers receive personalized digital coupons through the MyMorrisons app.
Likewise, MyWaitrose members enjoy exclusive discounts rather than loyalty points.
Cardholders can get a free hot drink when they bring a reusable cup and buy something in store.
Plus, they can get 20% off a selection of fish on Fridays and meat on Saturdays.
Marks and Spencer’s Sparks members also benefit from personalized offers.
CLUBCARD TIPS
Reward: One point earned for every £1 spent
Value: Up to 3p per point until June, then 2p per point
SHOPPERS were in a flurry when Tesco announced it would reduce the maximum value you can get when redeeming Clubcard vouchers for credit from select brands including Pizza Express, Hotels.com, Legoland and many more.
From June 14, customers will no longer be able to redeem vouchers for triple their face value, but they are only worth double.
Normally when you redeem your Clubcard vouchers for codes with Tesco’s rewards partners they are only valid for six months, but until midnight June 13 they will be valid for a full year.
Earn extra points by using the code on the back of your receipt and completing a survey on tescoviews.com or registering on shopperthinks.com to earn even more.
As well as earning points, scan your Club Card to get discounts on more than 8,000 products with Clubcard prices, saving the average customer £350 a year, according to Tesco.
FILL YOUR BOOTS
Reward: Four points earned for every £1 spent until May, then three points
Value: 1p per stitch
Buyers of the BOOTS Advantage card will earn three points for £1 in May, up from four previously.
But it is increasing the number of discounted items for cardholders as part of its Price Advantage offers and offering 10% off 6,000 own brand products.
Shoppers will still be able to earn eight points for £1 on baby items by joining the Boots’ Parenting Club, while over-60s can also earn eight points for £1 on own-brand products.
Plus, get 500 points when you bring five empty toiletries bottles to select branches and spend £10 there.
SUPERDRUG SAVINGS
Reward: One point earned for every £1 spent
Value: 1p per point
WITH Superdrug’s Health and Beauty Card, you must accumulate 100 points before you can spend them.
Download the app for special bonus offers. Cardholders also benefit from lower prices on certain products.
For example, an Oral-B Pro 3 3500 pink electric toothbrush with travel case costs £39.99 compared to £90 for members.
