Crypto Boss Behind $2 Billion Heist Arrested After Two Years Chase

The former head of the Thodex cryptocurrency exchange, Faruk Fatih Ozer, is now in the custody of the Turkish authorities. He was on the run after pulling off a $2 billion crypto heist.

Fugitive Osir was brought back from Albania after being pursued by international authorities for nearly two years. According to Turkish media, Anadolu AgencyOzer landed at Istanbul Airport on Thursday morning. He was then taken for a medical examination before being detained by the Istanbul police

The authorities returned him to Turkey after an Albanian court ordered his extradition in November last year. BeInCrypto reports that Albanian authorities arrested the fugitive in the coastal city of Vlorë in August 2022.

$2 billion Thodex crypto heist

On April 22, 2021, BeInCrypto reported that customers of Thodex cryptocurrency exchange could not withdraw funds. During that time, it had more than 390,000 active users. Initially, the exchange announced that it had been “temporarily closed” due to “abnormal volatility in the company’s accounts.”

According to a statement on Thodex, Faruk Fatih Ozer went abroad to meet with foreign investors on April 19. He even assured users that he would return to Turkey in a few days, but he did not respond later.

During investigations, authorities discovered that Ozer allegedly defrauded Thodex clients of approximately $2 billion. At the same time, Interpol issued a red notice against him for his arrest. Six people, including Ozer’s siblings, were jailed in May 2021.

Meanwhile, the president of Terraform Labs, Do Kwon, has been charged by the Montenegrin authorities with falsifying official documents. He was arrested at Podgorica airport while trying to board a private plane to Dubai last month.
