Frank Lampard has high hopes for the role Raheem Sterling can play until the end of the season and believes he has the kind of game to make his mark against Real Madrid.
Chelsea’s summer signing hasn’t really blossomed in Chelsea colors and struggled to make an impact in Saturday’s defeat to Wolves. The winger made his first start since returning from injury at Molineux in 2023 due to a hamstring injury.
Despite both his own and Chelsea’s struggles, Sterling has scored seven goals in 29 appearances for the Blues, but worryingly only two since the World Cup break, with the former Manchester City star out until the end of September. struck out four. However, Lampard has a high regard for Sterling.

The Blues boss has used him as a standard bearer throughout his coaching career and can now rely on the winger to help shape the squad moving forward. Lampard plans to hold more talks with Sterling in the coming weeks.
“I think he’s a fantastic player. He has long been one of the best wingers in the world, sometimes, perhaps in some people’s opinion, the best. I can’t remember how many times I’ve referred. the young wingers when I was here before at Chelsea, Derby and Everton actually. look at Raheem Sterling and see why he’s scoring 20 goals a season plus so I have the highest feeling for him in that regard.
“I’ve spoken to him a bit in the last few days (and) we also need to get the right team structure to create the best for the players and then drive them and of course I’ve only been here. a few days to get the best out of them so I can talk more with Rahim. I just think he’s the best player. Those things are always 50/50 for me. players are themselves, but Raheem has shown what kind of player he is.”
Real Madrid are looking forward to Lampard’s second test as Chelsea manager and he believes this is a time when Sterling can stand up and be counted.
“Maybe I haven’t watched all of Chelsea’s games this season, I’ve obviously been doing my job at times, but he’s certainly a player of a high level and a high level of competence and he understands that he’s going to win the game.” It fascinates him. In fact, he’s been in games like this before, so that’s something we’ll obviously build on in that regard, because some elements of the squad are maybe a little bit younger. Rahim has been there and done that and there is a history of production.”
In 2012, Chelsea found themselves in a difficult situation and under a new manager, but managed to force their way to the Champions League trophy. However, this is a collection of players who occupy different places in their journey and a group that Lampard has had little time to get to know.
Lampard has been given limited time to get a feel for his squad or bond with individuals. However, Lampard has found some familiarity with Chelsea owners and directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart and he is impressed with the project, although that may provide little comfort in Madrid.
He said. “There’s a lot to it. Part of it was that we parked the bus at the Nou Camp and were able to hang on for dear life. There are many things, destiny at different times. But we had a great desire. and great character and talent in a group that has been chasing the Champions League for years, so you remember.
“The one you don’t remember is when we got knocked out by Inter Milan in the semi-final or the quarter-final at Stamford Bridge, things like that. So the team and group will always go through tough times to achieve. It’s great, and of course now with the team we’re putting together, everyone understands that we’re not in that position right now. we are actually in a different position where we are trying or the club is trying to put something together. Great intention. Speaking to the owners and Lawrence and Paul, I’m really impressed with the intent. So we are not in that position but we have an opportunity against a fantastic team and we have to try to make the most of it. opportunity and go there with confidence and go there with conviction because otherwise, like I said, there if you don’t show up … and we’re here, but I think it’s going to be hard to compare (back) to the original question of previous years.”
