Katie Holmes gave an extensive interview to Glamor on Wednesday where she opened up about sexual assault, her love for her daughter Suri and how she doesn’t think of herself as sexy.
The Dawson’s Creek actress, 44, was promoting her new film Rare Objects – which she directed – with the publication when she spoke about family and her rise to fame.
In the film, there is a first scene where the young Benita interpreted by Julia Mayorga is assaulted.
She said of filming the sensitive moment: “What was most important to me was what it did for [Benita] following. For me, unfortunately, [sexual assault] is an understood secret among women, so we don’t need to say too much to know what we are talking about.
“Julia was so amazing in that scene, and it was really hard to shoot because I just needed her face.
“I kept saying to the two actors, ‘Those are your faces. And so they really had to go. Everyone was pretty shaken up afterwards.
Rare Objects is based on the 2016 novel of the same name by Kathleen Tessaro.
Although the book is set just after the Great Depression, Holmes’ film is set in modern-day New York City.
The film centers on a young woman who attempts to rebuild her life by working in an antique store before various figures from her past begin to resurface.
Katie looked amazing for the Glamor cover wearing a sheer black and white top with gold detailing and sporting a nose ring.
Other looks saw her pose in a gold cut-out dress with a belt before changing into a quirky white corset and gray pants.
Elsewhere during the interview, she gave a rare insight into family life with her 16-year-old daughter, Suri, whom she shares with her ex-husband, Tom Cruise.
She said it was very important to ‘protect her’ as her only child was ‘so visible at a young age’.
Katie added that she was “grateful” to be her parent because she is an “incredible person”.
It was reported earlier this month that Suri has now started applying to universities with the help of her mother – but the teenager’s famous father, Tom, won’t help her, as the actor’ has no role” in the life of her child.
Katie was given “sole custody” of Suri, and according to their divorce papers, Tom agreed to pay Katie $400,000 a year until Suri turns 18.
Suri hasn’t seen her Mission Impossible star father in a decade after going MIA when Katie refused to join the Church of Scientology.
Katie’s new movie Rare Objects hits theaters and on demand on Friday.
In addition to directing the film, the actress co-wrote its screenplay, served as producer, and appeared in a supporting role.
Artists such as Julia Mayorga, Derek Luke and Gina Jun rounded out the film’s cast.
Deadline previously revealed that the project was in development as of June 2021.
The trailer for the upcoming movie was then released last February.
Holmes recently sat down for an interview with Access Hollywood and opened up about how particularly emotional she was about the relationship between the novel’s protagonist and main supporting figure.
“What I love about this movie and what drew me to the book is the friendship between these two characters,” she said.

The performer then expressed that she wanted to illustrate their relationship in a positive light.
“We see them both struggling with different things in their lives, but they also find joy in each other and we see them supporting each other. I think it’s really nice to see on screen and see women supporting each other,’ she said.
Mayorga also said she quickly bonded with the film’s director while working on set.
“I was super excited to work with Katie…there are so many talented people on this film,” she said.
