Liam Payne has baffled his fans after teasing an upcoming fight against none other than Tommy Fury.
The former One Direction star, 29, shared a poster of the pair facing the event which will take place at Old Trafford in Manchester.
The poster simply read: ‘This summer – announcement tomorrow’, while Liam captioned the post with an eyes emoji.
The singer didn’t give any more details than that, with fans expected to wait for more information on Thursday.
Fans were shocked by the poster, with many wondering if it was a belated April Fool’s joke or a “wind-up” by the couple.
One fan wrote, “April Fool’s Day is surely,” while Gogglebox star George Bragg agreed, saying, “April Fool’s Day was last week.”
Another asked for more information, writing: ‘Liam James Payne please explain’, while a fourth asked: ‘Liam what is this?
A fifth fan thought the couple might just be making music together, saying, “Did they record a song together?”
A sixth fan joked: ‘Liam you’re going to be at Payne after this’, while another said: ‘Don’t tell me you’re boxing’.
Liam is not known to have a boxing background, having been heavily involved in distance running before joining One Direction.
Tommy has been a professional boxer since his debut in 2018 and recently won a celebrity match against Jake Paul.
The judges called the fight 76-73, 76-73, 74-75 in his favor – but with a point deduction and a knockdown against his name, it was far from straightforward.
This fight between the former British contestant of Love Island and the American YouTuber was the result of more than two years of social media warfare which only saw a clash come to a head on the third request.
Tommy had to pull out of the two previously held contests and was bombarded with claims that he was afraid to fight Paul’s seemingly less decorated boxer.
The 23-year-old has always maintained that he had to cancel his meetings with Paul for legitimate injuries and visa-related reasons.
It’s no wonder that after finally proving right, the Mancunian was moved to tears when he was announced the winner.
Since their fight, Tommy has been linked with other influencers such as KSI or Logan Paul, with the 23-year-old even calling KSI.
However, Tommy also claimed that he would not continue to face influencers during his boxing career and insisted that he was not motivated by money.
He has since appeared to walk back his call to KSI and insisted he was only motivated by leaving a legacy in the sport.
“It’s definitely something that crossed my mind (fighting more influencers and making huge amounts of money) but it always brings me back to why I got into boxing after this happened during the fight,” he said. BT Sports Boxing.
“I’m not into boxing for the money anymore because you know I don’t live the most extravagant lifestyle, I don’t live on yachts, I don’t buy all that fancy stuff and that doesn’t don’t really interest me.
“I have a car, I have a place to lay my head at night and I have a family and that makes me happy.”
Fury went on to explain how his dream is to be world champion and – rather than earning much more by taking on various influencers in exhibition bouts – he is focused on achieving his goals.
He added: “Money now is not really important. I am in boxing to make my name go down in history. I’ll be in boxing because it’s a passion of mine and I’ll always come back to being that old man and saying “did I really do my best?”
